hi have a 1983 bronco i got this from a kid . it is a 460 he said 1977 the starter went out before i got it .so i never seen the old one. he got a new one at orileys .but when you start it. it just spins past the flex plate.so i got a diffrent one same thing .put a 390 in three hole starter .to much play. does work if you put way over and put smaller bolt in. but kicks it back over. dont know what flex plate is in there. i know it ran when he had it.its almost like the starter drive is to small its a one inch starter drive gear has nine teeth. any ideas
Have you tried maybe seeing if the starter from a different year of 460 is any different? Maybe the guy you got it from was mistaken on the year. Wouldnt be the first time its happened to me lol
ya i tried diffrent starters are there any numbers.on motor to tell me what year the motor is. some are telling me to shim out flex plate. i broke my ankle and tore two legiments had surgery yesterday. so cant do much for awhile. i might have to pull the flex plate out and see what it is. all i know that he was driving it before starter went out. making a mud truck out of it. so wont be doing it this summer any way. thanks for the help
Well, ive never looked on a 460 to see what its stamp consists of but i know on FE motors, there is a stamp on the block on the passenger side ahead of the starter. The C at the beginning is for 60s so the one in the pic would be 1967 when that block was cast, D would be 70s.

Maybe you can see something under if you look around. Hope that helps.
