96 F150 302 5spd 170000 kms and driven rather hard for the last 90000 kms. Been in a couple of accidents but all repaired. Has headers and dual exhaust (not to spec either) and both motor mounts are busted in half, otherwise there's nothing else wrong that I'm aware of. Here's the problem, when driving around at low rpms it stumbles as though it lost a cylinder or two. Already changed plugs cap and rotor. Wires are next. No idea what happend but it started suddenly, and is consistent. Any ideas out there.
Thanks, it very well could be a leak. Now that you mentioned a vac leak could be the problem, I did pull the intake apart awhile ago to clean out the sludge in there from the pollution control and never checked for any leaks.
I would look into more of a mechanical problem.
I would highly suggest you do a compression test and a cylinder leakage test.
Does it start around 1000 RPM and below?
I’m willing to best you have some piston ring failure
Does it only happen while driving, or at idle?
Pullin the codes may not work just yet. I recently installed a Lightning front bumper valance with some driving lights and while drilling through the firewall, I hit some wires, causing the c/e light to appear. The stumbling was around long before the lights but now I have no cruise con. or horn. No big deal to fix but hard place to get at. Rings could be the problem, but I have my doubts as it burns no oil, and hasn't lost any of it's get up and go. I will check on all those ideas and thanks for them. I will post a follow up when diagnosis is complete.
