Electrical woes

Ladies and Gentlemen,

I have been around the forum off and on for years. I haven't posted much, as I have had no problems with my blue oval which has one payment left as of current writing. (or typing)

Anyways, my brother in law has a 1995 Ranger that has a bit of an electrical gremlin, or several that need to be addressed. He started replacing parts instead of troubleshooting it before I absconded with his truck.

The issue at the moment is with lighting. With the vehicle running, and the headlight switch on, there are no low beams, no parking lamps, and no dash/instrument lighting. I can however, actuate the high beams, brake lights and signals. And to further complicate the issues, the lighting at the headlight switch, illuminates when all lights are in the off position.

I have not done any troubleshooting yet, as I have neither found any good diagrams, nor had the time to look at it yet. any help would be appreciated please.

First off which parts did he replace and what led him to replace them. Has he changed the headlight switch? The high beams, turn signals, and brakelights all run off of different switches. The more detailed info you give the better a chance someone has incountered the same problem.

Headlight switch is the only one. I believe.

Sounds like positive/negative poles are backwards but that would suggest that the switch was defective out of the box (if the new switch is at the root of the matter).

I did some testing via the multi-meter and found blown 20A fuse which repaired the instrument lighting and parking lights. I get voltage to the multi-function switch and believe that the multi-function may be at fault. I wish I had a pin out so I could confirm my suspicion.

Sorry, no access to a 95 wiring diagram. Ford cars manual, for a 97 Mustang sez:

check with self powered test light
hi beam r/y and lg/bk should be closed
lo beam r/y and r/bk should be closed
flash to pass db/o and lg/bk AND r/y and r/bk should be closed
hi beam, lever stalk away from steering wheel
lo beam, lever stalk in detent toward steering wheel
flash, pull and hold lever stalk toward steering wheel.
pin 1 lb pin 4 w/r pin 5 r/lg pin 7 db/d pin 2 r/y pin ? lg/w pin 5 w/lb pin 2 g/lb
pin 10 lg/o pin x lg/br pin 3 r/bk

The pin numbers and pin colors are VERY blurry and the schematic will not 'blow up' when I try to make it larger, so YMMV. HTH
I would bet on a blown panel light fuse from switch replacement fumbling. If those lights worked before. The voltage for the hi and low beams comes through a relay operated by the headlight switch on the 'stang. Dunno about the truck.
