I've been looking for an old truck to restore as a project and weekend toy, and I recently came across one that appears to be a good deal, but I know absolutely nothing about these trucks. So I was wondering if you guys would look at the pictures and the info provided and see what you think. Also any tips on what to look out for once I do go look at it (about an 1 1/2 hour drive). As well as any tips on what to do with it if I do get it.
Here's the ad (info taken out so you guys can't ****** it up before me
Barn and garage kept 1965 ford f100 short wide, good straight truck with minimal to no rust, 302 motor and transmission with recently rebuilt carb, front brake job(drum), brand new floor shift kit and an original owners manual. Did run before engine and transmission was pulled. Is a great project truck, just don't have the time to work on it. Can provide more photos if needed Price $850
And the pictures
Thanks in advance for your response.
PS I already emailed about more pictures, but no response yet.
That must have been one filthy and leaky barn for the hood surface to look like that. When I got mine, 5 years ago, it was never garage kept and the hood looked 100x better than that. Start looking under the whole cab as it seems like the truck did get wet and who knows what went down the cowl vent and got stuck below.
Like he said about what could have gone down the cowl...
When you look at it, open the doors and below the bottom hinge
is a hole that you can check inside of the fender wall, which is also the
area (inside the fender) where the ventilation comes into the cab
from the cowl, good place for a mouse house, and a lot of dirt.
Also pull back the floor covering to see what kind of shape the floor is in.
Inside of the cab, in the rear corners, there is about enough
void space in each corner to hold about a gallon of water, so if water
ever got there, it will rot there easily. There is where you will find the
"almost no rust" the most.
The front cab mounts near the top of the front wheels is probably the
first thing you should look at because the tires throw everything
directly onto them, if you live where they salt the roads, they go
out. Unless you plan to tear it off the frame...
$850 is not a lot of money these days, but if you look around a little
you should be able to find one that can roll down the road for a few K.
They made a lot of them back then and it's amazing how many are still
around. There are a lot of projects around that have been started and
given up on too.
The 302 didn't come with the truck but is about as fuel efficient of a V8
that you can put in it.
As was pointed out already, the hood has been weathered on. Look at the roof and fenders same thing. Check the drip rails. Look for rust there. Also the core support, take an awl with you or at least a screw driver. Pod around the core support from the wheel well opening. Cab mounts. and bed area. Since the hood, roof and fenders look bad check the front of the bed for rust and cancer. Look at top of bed floor then slide under and look at it from there. Water sits in the front of the bed and eats away at it. If it was running, why would they pull the motor? and why would they not seal it up if it's going to be sitting? Valve cover missing breather. Same elements on hood, roof and fenders are probably in the motor.

Reason: adding information
A little more info on this truck, it wad last registered in the 80's and since then the last two owners have had it in a barn/garage. He said on cab corner has a small (dime size) area rusted through and one drip rail rusted through (same side and size). The engine was out of a mid 70's car, current owner is unsure what because it was previous owner. Engine and trans were removed because trans was leaking. The weirdest thing (to me at least) it was an original 3 on the column, the current trans is automatic, and floor shifter kit was purchased but not installed. He stated somehow it was rigged to work with the original shifter.
Would it be better and or easier to go back to a manual or to convert to an auto (my personal preference would be floor shift auto).
Thanks again for all the help guys. Also he is supposed to take more pics tomorrow and send them to me, I'll try to get them updated.
Welcome to the gang partner, this group of guys will steer you in the right direction for that project. The truck is probably ok, just look real close under the doors, seat, mats etc. also when raising the hood, watch and feel the action of the hood hinges. They are 100$ apiece, so let that start your decision making. Also try to inspect the truck alone, as they like to steer you away from trouble spots\topics by praising other areas. You can get this truck if you want it but everything will need restoring\redoing\going thru. Tell him you have several to look at, and offer 450$ I bought a 19k$ ford for 13k$ like this, and the dealer saw my out of state tag, as well as the CASH on his table good luck partner
