Jack up the axle (or the control arm) as close to the wheel as possible without touching the tire. Have someone look at the ball joints while you slip a bar under the tire and pull up on it. On a strut car, you let the tires droop and jack up on the frame/body.

So yeah, you were right. I just wanted to be clear.

Glad you found it. I parked my truck for a couple days when I hit a bump and the truck jumped into on-coming traffic. After I dug the seat cover out of my butt, I ordered the parts I needed. Loose front ends are no fun at all.
