coil spring install

I was wondering if anyone can give me some info on installing new coil springs on an 85 f150. The Chiltons manual says to support the frame with jackstands and lower the axle to relieve the tension on the springs. Is this safe? I've been told I need spring compressors, and I'd be crazy to do it that way. I've never worked with coil springs before, if anyone can give me some advice I'd appreciate it. Thanks

The chilton manual is correct. Unhook the front shocks and brake lines and lower the front end with the frame on jackstands then unbolt the springs. keep some tension on the jack or the front end will fall when you undo the bolts. Then lower the front axle and the spring will pull right out.

You shouldn't have to remove the shocks/brake lines unless you are installing some 4" lift coils. Don't need spring compressor, as the stress is off of the spring when you lower it. The easiest way is to jack up the truck until you can put a stand under the frame and let the tire down w/o touching the ground. Remove the tire and unbolt the spring. You'll need a 1 1/8th wrench and a pipe over it. Just follow the manual.
