Need Some Brake Advice

Hi again all,

Well, I am going to have to do a complete brake job on my truck. All 4 rotors, all pads, new pins, SS lines and a fluid flush thrown in for good measure.

I use my truck mostly for towing (8K toy hauler, jet ski's) and the occasional jaunt about town.

I've decided on Hawk LTS pads. I will put OEM rotors on the rear, but haven't decided on the front. Would I be better with the OEM style or slotted rotors (Powerslot or Powerstop)? Also, what are the ramifications of using different pads then Hawks on the rear being as they don't work as hard? I'm not trying to be cheap, just on a budget.

Thanks!

With all of the SD's '99 and up Ford has been using the same friction material on both the front and rear axle to keep a balanced vehicle. Using LTS up front with a less aggressive friction on the rear shifts the brake balance forward. Normally that just causes more brake wear on the front axle. But if you are using the vehicle commercially, then with the additional heat dissipation up front you're putting the rubber components under high stress as well. Under the very worse conditions with a trailer in the mountains that have in excess of 6° slopes, you could be risking brake fluid boil on the front.

FedEx did this more then a decade ago with their E Vans, switching to Performance Friction pads up front from PMI pads then having drivers report no brakes until the brakes cooled. Service management complained it was due to the lack of brake fluid changes, but in fact they altered the brake balance with a higher friction brake pad up front.
