C6 Leaking - Planning Ahead
Some time ago I posted about this, explaining that I've replaced the pan gasket twice and was careful the first time and extremely careful the second, so am quite sure it isn't that. At that time it was suggested that maybe the seal where the linkage goes into the case is leaking. To ensure I could track the leakage down I've cleaned the tranny quite well, so can now tell that the leakage is in the area of the linkage or the intermediate band adjustment. In fact, if I had to bet I'd bet on the intermediate band adjustment as it is wet and the truck hasn't been driven in at least two weeks.
So, the question to y'all is how big of a deal it is to replace the seals for those items? IOW, do I pull the tranny while the engine is out, put it on the stand, and work it there? Or, since I have a lift, would it be less work to do it on the lift?
And, maybe I should ask what your thoughts are on those being the leaks? The FSM shows a seal for the linkage and the verbage with replacing it implies that it can be done on the vehicle and only requires removing the pan to access the various bits to remove. But, I haven't found anything specific to the intermediate band adjustment screw and a seal for it.
I'm looking for your thoughts and experiences, please. If pulling the tranny would make it far, far easier then so be it. But, if I can do it fairly well in situ then I'd rather do that.
Oh yes - do any of you have experience putting a drain plug in a C6 pan? Getting tired of the drain process. The fluid is so cherry red at this point I could resell it!
I know I don't need this info immediately, but w/my memory I'd better try to get it while I'm thinking about it. And, I know I didn't stump you. So, please give me your thoughts re to pull or not on the C6 to repair the leak.
Can't answer about the band adjustment screw, as it would just be a WAG.
Drain plug is pretty easy. At one time, there was a universal drain plug kit available at most parts stores. It required drilling a hole in the pan, and it was a 3 piece kit. Consisted of a fitting and nut that went in the pan hole, and a smaller plug that screwed into the middle of the larger fitting.
I haven't seen one lately, but haven't looked either. I plan to add a drian plug to the pan, if I ever remove it, on both my truck and dad's. Makes dropping the pan a MUCH less messy job.... You can't drain all the fluid out, but it gets most out.
As for the drain, there's one on Amazon for $10.83 w/free shipping. Or, they have pans w/a plug for $22.22 and free shipping. But, why can't I drill a hole and braze a nut on the inside and use a replacement drain plug from the parts store?
And, there's the question of where to put it. Seems to me it should be on the side, obviously as low as possible to drain as much fluid as possible. But, this is just to make draining easy so I don't have to have it on the bottom to get every drop. And, if it is on the bottom it might get hit by something. Thoughts?
