Question Engine swap

Currently I'm building a 1984 Ford F-250 4x4 C-6 auto. The 6.9 gave up so I purchased an entire 1978 F-150 with a 400 in it and C-6 2w drive it looks like the tranny is gone in the 78. By the looks of it, it looks like I'm going to have to get a different tranny and T case. I have a different tranny out of an 81 F-350 with a 351, but am kind of pressed for cash and don't want to buy a T case for the New Process 4-speed. But in the event that I do get some money and the C-6 in the 84 won't work I was wondering if I could mate an NP-205 up to it if not what would be a cheap but strong substitute.

What a jumble of info

I think we are not sure of what exactly you are trying to do.

Is the 351 a Windsor or an M. If its an M the tranny should be fine except you would have to use a remote t-case with a 4x2 tranny, (can someone tell me if I am wrong)

Your best bet would be to look for something that came stock in the truck if you are interested in simplicity, ie. 460 with C6 or 351w with C6. If you are not interested in simplicity then just make it work

How difficult would it be to divorce the T-case you have now? I have a similar problem, and would like to divorce the T-case I have now.

The 351 is an M and what I was wondering was if I could mate the 1978 400 V-8 on a 78 C6 to a C6 in a 1984 4x4 that had a 6.9 diesel. I haven't pulled the motor out of the 78 yet. I was just wondering if the 78 C6 has the same bellhousing as the 84 C6 that was mated to a diesel.

mtyrell as for divorcing the T case mated to the 84 C6 it is a Borg Warner and I haven't heard of that being done. Also I don't think I could afford the kit to accomplish this if there was such a kit.

I do appreciate your suggestions though guys.

The 6.9 and the 78 gas bellhousings are different.

However, you can get a gas 4wd C6 to mate up to the BW transfer case in there now. They both share a 31 spline output and adaptor pattern. Keep in mind though that there are two different length adaptors available for the C6 to 205. You need to find the correct one with the same shaft stickout and adaptor length as your diesel trans.

Why don't you find a later 7.3 diesel to swap in and save the hassles? The 7.3 will get better mileage and has the potential to outpull even a built 400.

Thanks RCrawler for the info.

Now will the T-case on the 84 auto mate up to the 81 NP 435 or will I have to find a different T-case and Tranny all together. Since the NP 435 is a 2 wheel drive tranny is there a way I can use this tranny without a divorced T-case or am I hooped for that idea.

I already have a 7.3 and don't want another. I like for driving down the road because of the mileage it gets but it is lagging in horsepower and I can't afford a turbo at the moment. So I got a gas for the easy horsepower I can make. I don't really care about mileage since the 84 is going to be a trail rig. I already have the 400 so I really am not in favor for finding another motor.

You can't mate the 435 to your transfer case. The output shaft would need to be changed. Does the 435 have the square pattern output adaptor bolt pattern? If it does, you are out of luck to just change the output shaft. The 4wds use what known as the A pattern adaptor. They don't make the 4wd output adaptor with the square pattern, so you would need to find a 4wd transmission case.

Thanks again RCrawler. I guess I'll have to keep my eye open for a tranny and T-case for my 78 400 V-8.

First off the tranny that is mated to your 6.9 will bolt directly up to the 400, because the 6.9/7.3dsl uses an adapter plate that is bolted to the block that makes it into a 351M/400-429/460 bellhousing pattern.

I already knew that the diesel used an adapter plate because I noticed it when I pulled it out of the truck. I think I'm going to go with RCrawler's advice and just find myself another tranny and t-case that will work on my 400. When I pulled the starter in prep for the removal of the engine in the 78 I noticed that it bolts in a little different than the diesels. I was going to pull the motor soon but due to some crazy weather up here in Canada it will have to wait.(It is snowing right now in April crazy considering we just had a week of 10 degree C weather.) I might as well find a Dana 60 to replace the weak TTB Dana 44 which I have noticed has a blown drivers side u joint.
Thanks for your advice.

Well it is your money, but I have done the swap myself in an 85 that used to be a dsl and the tranny worked just fine.

Since the tranny worked fine there was no t-case issue.

We actually used a 460, but the 460 and 400 share the same bellhousing so a 400 would have worked as well all you would need is the frame mounts for the motor.

I have the frame mounts brian. But I'm kind of split in two. Now I really don't know what to think.
