Ok im going to keep it short, I can't get my truck to crank, I can get it to click when I turn the ignition, like the battery is low, but if I try to jump the solenoid (it's given me problems in the past so I thought that was my problem) it just turns on my fuel pump, no starter or anything. Does this just most likely mean my battery is shot? I've been pretty rough on it, I hate to know how many times I've had to get a jump.
1.Bad Starter - Have someone turn the key while you check for voltage at the S terminal(this terminal is the one coming off the solenoid to the starter)if voltage is present your starter is bad
when cranking your solenoid is good.
2.Bad solenoid - If you have voltage at the s terminal when cranking your solenoid is good.
3.Bad Battery - Turn on your headlights then turn key if lights go out you have a bad battery.
Thanks for the reply guys, I got a new solenoid and slapped it on the truck and it starts right up, but now I notice the alternator isn't charging... Oh goodie. It's a pretty new alternator too, not more than a few years old and it was new when I got it, at least from what I remember.
Curious if there is some common problem that can keep the alt from charging other than it being the alt it self?
Okay, took the alternator off and got it tested, tested fine from what they said... so, he said probably check the fusible link, which actually would make sense because my solenoid smoked and took damage when I jumped my truck last (when this all started). Well I looked at the links, but I don't see any burn damage or anything. I check continuity and from what I could tell I have good connection between the solenoid to the alternator, am I doing something wrong or missing something? I really need to get this fixed so I can get to work tomorrow.
You either left the fuse link off or it is open.
Try pulling the fuse link apart and if it stretches it is bad.
Else make sure you have battery voltage on the two Black wires with white stripes on them and the Yellow wire with a white stripe on it at the alternator.
Also with the key on make sure you have voltage on the Light Green wire with a red stripe at the alternator.
I checked to be sure I had all the links connected to the solenoid. -I do.
Tried pulling on the fusible link (the dark green wire one) -no budging, feels solid and good.
Checked voltage at the two bigger sized black wires (didn't have white stripes on them (from what I could tell) but I imagine that's the ones you're talking about) at the alternator harness -both came back with voltage.
Checked voltage at the yellow wire at the harness -came back with voltage
KOEO checked voltage at green wire at the harness -came back with voltage
Oh man, this is discouraging, I don't know of much else to check. :\
Update, threw the alternator back on hooked everything up and it's pushing 14v again now... I'm guessing one of the links or wires was/is shorted? Just rangling and pulling the wires around probably reconnected them. Think that's a fair guess?
If it comes back/I figure out and fix what exactly the problem was I'll re-update this thread.
Update: Took it out to see how it was doing, not good, looked down at my alt/batt tester that hooks into the cigarette lighter, and it showed 10v and dipping fast, took a screw driver and held it to the back of the alt to see if it was magnetized, sure enough it wasn't, I said ah-ha! Smacked it with the screw driver a few times and could hear the difference, looked inside and it was sitting at 14v, so it's the alt.
But, is that the regulator? is there a way to tell? Something cheaper than a new alt. would be nice.
