clicking in reverse

My 99 250 is clicking in reverse. I read on here that if the tag in the door has 31 under the axle that that means it does not have limited slip. If this is true then I would assume that the problem would be the u joints. Don't know if the info would help or not, but my diff cover has 12 bolts in it. Can you please confirm if this is correct? Also how do I go about checking the u joints?
Thanks, Mike

From what I have read so far it sounds more like a rear u joint problem. I have had a vibration around 50-60mph and assumed it was my ball joints (that I just got the parts for) that had been diagnosed as bad by a local shop that was causing the problem.

Any advise on where to start would help. Is there a write up on this job or any pics to help? I will probably take the drive shaft out myself and bring it to a shop to have them replace the part.

it s pretty simple just slide the yoke off of the driveshaft in put it on 4x4 blocks of wood in use a hammer in a punch to drive the old ujoint out to check if the ujoiunt is bad grabed the driveshaft in move it up in down or side to side if there is any movement in the ujoint then it is bad hope this helps
