I just installed power steering on my truck. The truck didn't come with it originally so i purchased the parts at a local salvage yard. The only problem i have is the groan noise when you turn it left or right at idle. The reservoir is at the correct level but it still makes the sound. Is it because of a blockage somewhere or is it a bad pump?
The system may have air and still needs to be bled thoroughly.... Jack up the front end so the tires are off the ground and place jackstands under the frame. Fire up the engine (to pressurize the system) and cycle side to side like 10 times. Double-check the fluid level during the operation. It may burp up some air and that's a good thing in this case. Refill and do it again.
My 74 4x4 has power steering probs 2. If im not moving its very very hard to turn the tires. I usually have 2 put it in neutral and rev it a little and turn while reving. I assume its just a bad pump. Any ideas????????

Probably a combination of tired pump/big tires. Mine does it too at a standstill/idle and you turn hard .

If you put a used pump on, it could just be worn. Especially if it is the 78 and newer pump that has the plastic resivour and filler cap. Those are prone to making noise under a strain. Turning the wheels at idle engine spped, sitting still, is about the most strainful thing you can do. Not only to the PS pump, but also the entire steering setup and even the frame.

Let us know how it turns out.
Btw, 4WD or 2WD?
I need to install a new pump on mine asap as well. After installing a new pump should this process be done as well? or do you only do this in his situation where he just installed/introduced an entire new power steering system?
I have a brand new pump, lines and gear box. I have bled it off the ground, on the ground, and with a vacuum pump attached. It still groans. Eventually I'll find a mout for a saginaw that works with my 460 and power steering conversion.
