Weird...batts are 8 mos old....turn key to on and the glow plugs are pulling me down to 11.4...then after they kick off I get 12.5...no crank at 12.5, just the dreaded click...reading 12.95 independently with no draw...GPR or batts?
Take a screw driver and short out the two large lugs on the starter selenoid (located on the passenager's side inside fender..) If the engine chanks, the selenoid is probably bad..
No.. but you can following the small red wire that from the starter and it should lead you to the selenoid..The selenoid has a large red wire (about 1/4" in diameter and small red wire..
Swapped batts from another truck of mine...no diff...found start solenoid, jumped and nothing has proper voltage on one side....went under and whacked starter...tapped solenoid again and a minor crank attempt....I'm goin with starter at this point
I had a buddy hold the key in crank position and tested the voltage at the starter w/ my meter...showing high 12's at the starter so it's gotta be it i believe...tried in Neutral earlier in my quest and no difference. As usual, thanks for all the quick helpful replies...the solenoid was the "missing link" for me to diagnose Happy 4th!
The OP has a 2000, which has a Mitsubishi starter. They have a tendency at higher mileages to go away as a result of the on-starter solenoid's contacts being eroded away.
That's NOT the fender-well mounted "starter solenoid".
The brushes last a long time, and the planetary gear-reduction is pretty bulletproof, and usually do not need replacing.
That solenoid IS replaceable separately, and usually doing so restores the operation of the starter.
Well, I thought it was on the starter too but it's right next to the battery w/ a heavy battery lead going to it and it sure does resemble a starter solenoid...if it isn't,,,what is it?
