Hello everyone,
I gots a little Q here for ya'll,
Well...On my truck i got dual exhaust with manifolds. (soon ill get some headers) but it 'mostly' only smokes out the driver side. Sometimes out both. I wonder why??? I plan on doing a compression test fairly soon. (soon as i can borrow a guage)
I checked my plugs an there is oil only around the threads, and the tips are a blackish soot- like dusty sort of. It does burn oil, mostly on startup.
Oh gee, my bad i got another Q..
I tried doin that test to fin dout my gearing in the rear>... I lifted the rear, marked the tire as well as drive shaft, and counted the revolutions on drive shaft for one wheel revolution. I got 1.75 revs of shaft to one rev of tire.......?? I dont think thats rite.
Its stock 3.55. So im lost on that one.
Thanks guys for all/any ideas suggestions.
For the smoke, you probably have bad rings or a head gasket. But head gaskets usually leak coolant into the cyl's and that's white smoke. It could be valve guides too, from what I've been told.
As for the rear, that comes out right. Because of the spider gears, you have to multiply that 1.75 by two which gives you 3.5. If you jack up both wheels and spin them both at the same rate, you'll get the 3.5 off the shaft.
Ahhhhh yes yes..
Thanks KJ, that helped a ton.
I figured it was seals or rings or somethin of the sort...Ill have to look into that pretty quik.
Yeah .. the gearing... that makes sense, i never thought of that,
heheh thanks for the quik reply man... appreciate it.
Borrow or buy a gauge, acompresion test ist the single most important test you can perform. Is it white or black smoke? Black smoke is a symptom that the engine is running rich (most likely since you mentioned the plugs are sooty). Try this...do a tune up..(fresh plugs- correct gap too!) make sure your points are gapped, set your timing, and if so inclined adjust your valves,(do so first thing in the morning before the engine has been fired). Then set the idle speed. Locate the air mix screws, two on a two barrel 4on a four etc... start with one and screw in till the engine stumbles (or runs a little rougher) then slowly back out till the engine picks up its idle and runs smooth and no longer picks up speed. this is where you want to stop..now go on to the next one. It takes some practice to know what to listen for... your ears are the best tool you own! THis will set up your carbs the best way without a gas analyzer. Drive the truck for a couple days or less, then pull a plug to see how its burning..
oh if you keep unscrewing the air mix and nothing changes then turn the engine off remove the screw clean it off, blow some air into the hole to clean out the passage, then try agin..if you don't have an air compressor and suitable nozzle then by a can of air from a photo shop or Staples or a Computer joint carries it, and it has a handy WD40 straw to get in the tight places..
I work on Ferraris and vintage Porsches this is how we set up all the carbs...
Hey Thanks Ferrwrench
Ya, theres a guy at my work... he;s gonna get me a guage..an i asked him about my symptoms (he used to run a shop) and he says its my valve guides/seals whatvr..
But the smoke is neither white nor grey..but blue... then the blueness fades after startup..I do believe it is running a bit rich tho.
Ya..I will do the tune up pretty quik.... but first its my steering shaft.... the whole damn thing from the box to the firewall is as loose as a goose.. (its bad)
That sounds pretty sweet... workin on ol sweet cars.. awesome man..
Thhanks boys..
If its running really rich the smoke will be black. I wouldn't be surprised if your valve seals are bad though. They take forever to replace. Your spark plugs should have a little soot on them, if they are white thats when you run into problems. New spark plugs also mean that you should re-tune your carb. You didn't say what motor you have so if its a 460 disregard this because they will always run the way that causes them to use the most fuel/oil. I have ever been impressed by a 460 or anything that big unless its a diesel.
Hmmm alrite... Well i have yet to see any black smoke..but out the one side it spits out gas..very little, but if you put your leg say about a foot away youll see splatter on your pant leg.
As for my engine ,. its a 360 (ford)
Yeah... im not lookin forward to the valve redo..but buddy of mine knows what hes doin.. so i think we';ll do it soon. And hey, ill learn somethin as well, which is not bad.
try puting your hand a foot from the exhaust, I dont think it would be spiting gas... If that were the case it would prob be igniteing in your exhaust (causeing a pop sound) I would think its water comeing from the exhaust not gas, you might want to check it, just put your hand back there and after you got some smell it (try to eliminate the smell of exhaust) if you cant tell, taste it.. lol, its the only way I could tell, if its gas or water, you will tell by taste... good luck
Now that I know you have a 360. FE's have very poorly designed exhaust manifolds. Seriously, take a look at how small they are. This engine pretty much requires headers.
I am also wondering if you have hardened valve seats. I am pretty sure that it is water coming out of your exhaust.
Next time you are at the parts house tey to find a can of Sea-Foam and pour a 1/2 can of that stuff in your gas tank and the other half in your crankcase that will take any water out of you motor where its not supposed to be. I also like a can of Sea-Foam trans tune if you have an automatic or power steering, it really helps a lot.
Yeah,... i took a look...turns out it is just water.. only spits out on the 1 side tho... kinda wierd i think.
I agree with the manifolds...they are pretty weak alrite.
Sea-foam eh... ok ill take a look next time im at a place..
Thanks for all the help guys.
ohh nice... UFC is on tha tube..
Sounds to me like you have a leaking head gasket, that will cause watter to be in your exhaust. I would reacomend replaceing it soon befor it gets any worse.
Thanks for all the help guys
Yup..Im gonna get inside there pretty quik....Just gotta wait for a buddy to get some tools, And a place to work.
I moved here just over a yr ago,and renting a house. So all i have is a damn drivewayx
My old house,we had a shop the size of a house, with almost everything, besides a tire balancer machine.. Oh well, wht can ya do. Thanks again
A lot of times you'll get condensation in the exhaust that will blow out of the tailpipe. This is normal. If you have one spark plug that's clean and the rest sooty I'd maybe suspect a head gasket.
Depending on how the exhaust pipes are shaped you might see more out of one side than the other.
Hope this helps.
Greg
o.k here we go. do a compression test on the side that is blowin blue smoke, that means oil. Write down all the numbers now do the compression test again and squirt some oil down in the cylinder. If the compression goes up then its your rings and if it stays the same its your valves. I used to own a 360 same problem. when you have dual exhaust unless you have a balance tube it makes sense that it is only coming out one side. it meens that one of your four cylinders is getting tired. The dual exhaust seperates the left side of the motor and right to let it breath more.
