Unhappy emissions

1988 bronco xlt 4x4 3"lift, bfg mudders...5.8

I just went through emissions testing and Failed!!
passed equipment check but...
HC 9.8 !!! standard is 3.0
CO 27.48 standard is 25.00
NOX 5.75 standard is 5.50

Anyone know an inexpensive repair for the HC etc? Can't even get a waiver in AZ cause its more than twice the acceptable!
Thanx in advance!

Vaccuum leaks, dirty filter(s) and engine oil, bad O2 sensor. I'd personally check these things first before spending a ton of money to have a shop tell you what is causing it. You will have to pull the codes or have a local parts retailer like Autozone or NAPA do it for free to check the O2 and other sensors. Steve83 has a link that describes how to do this yourself in detail but I can never remember the link.

I would definitely look at the 02 sensor.....EGR valve and its selenoids...
PCV valve....

also have your TPS sensor checked....

have a scope test performed to check for improvements...

make sure to run the engine like hell before showing up for the test....

Pull the codes before buying any parts, but do keep the engine hot & running for at least 10 min before being tested. Tune it up according to the emissions sticker and Ch.1 of the Haynes manual.

Thumbs up emissions

tested tps sensor...fine
egr still fairly new...replaced oil and filter, air filter, fuel filter, plugs, wires, pcv valve, and repaired THREE vacuum leaks...but get this...ran engine in the dark and checked for cracked wire arcing...found one on cylinder 4 (toughest to get to, of course). Dah, I was only running on 7 cylinders! PASSED emissions with flying colors!
Just needed a good tune-up...now if I can just find the exhaust leak before I pass out!
Thanx, guys...you ROCK!
