Spent a good deal of time reading here and normal stalling seems to indicate an IAC valve issue, however, my 97 F150 4.2L stalls only during really hot weather (90+), while in stop and go driving with the A/C on, and does not do it all the time...
It will start to lose RPMs and then start shuddering and even miss/backfire. I have to put it in neutral and 'feather' the gas pedal to keep it running and then seems to have no power (or maybe even bogged down, like too much fuel) and turn off the A/C to be able to get it going again, in another block it acts okay unless I put the A/C back on. If I leave the A/C off until highway speeds its fine...(A/C problem?)
I also noticed it seems to be getting harder to move - i.e. it acts like the brakes are engaged during take off, not sluggish, just seems to be hard than normal to move than it should...unrelated problems?
First pull the codes, OBDII DTC, even if your check engine light is not on, your computer may be detecting pending sensor problems.
There are items that may need looking at
EGR
Crank position sensor
Cam position sensor
DPFE
Fuel filter
and other parts prone to wear.
I have had AC compressors fail with out engine "operation problems", but checking your compressor would be a good idea. Proper refrigerant helps
prolong compressor life.
When was the last complete tune up? plugs, wires, filters, and so on?
Whenever replacing any electrical part, always remove the negative battery cable.
Shutting computer off will allow the computer to reset.
This is the best advice I can offer at this time, due to the age of your truck, there will be items that will need to be replaced.
My 2002 F150 needs constant monitoring and it seems to need it more often than before.
No codes, I have my own scanner, multi line, don't even need a book (Im lazy that way) throws no codes at all. I was going to replace the IAC but it seems like it would do it more often. Tuneup about 5k miles ago... maybe less. Fuel filter changed days ago with oil change, and haven't played with the EGR yet either, didn't want to give it symptoms if the gasket doesn't seat right, etc. Oh yeah has only 103k on it.
Question wouldn't crank and cam sensor have problems all the time and not during heavy load? (Which is why I am leaning toward IAC, but seems strange.)
