I have a 85 f250 4x4 reg cab 4speed, 354axle ratio,
bought cheep, Good body, good drive train, 460 has cracked Block,
So now I need to decide what to put back in?
I know it's my decision but I thought it would be fun to get all sugjestions from, you guys
It will be -mostly -just driven to work daily' (5miles each way)
But I do want to be able to pull a fifth wheel camper -That I do not have yet -and would only pull it occasionally.
300/6, 351w, 460,? I have to admit fuel prices are a concideration.
For what you would spend converting over to another motor as the entire powertrain would have to change, keep a 460 in it. Plus if you plan on pulin anything that big, youll need it.
X2 for another 460....5 miles each way really isn't hurting you fuel wise no matter how you slice it. Wish I had your truck, btw!! I have to convert to a 460 lol
Here are some places in Missouri that have used 460's for sale. 1987

Recommend going for a straight up timing set or even swapping out to an aftermarket RV cam with just a bit more grunt. Also, cleaning up the cylinder heads a bit will wake the motor up a LOT.
Good Idea about cam timing, I'm checking out good used engines now and also looking for rebuildable blocks. To bad about mine ,cylinders not worn bad just has crack in #6
You might want to check out 460 Ford Forum It is a lot like this site but it is only big Fords. You can find some pretty in depth info on the 429/460 engines. X2 on the timing chain and cleaning you cylinder head ports. Look on the top side of the exhaust ports to find the casting # of the heads. Prob D3VE's or E6TE. 460's are pretty tough blocks, how did it crack? good luck
I don't really know how it cracked, I bought the truck eventhough it had a rough Idle ( Did I say I got it Cheap?) I figured vacume leak, plugwire or something. Well I did find a vacume leak at the rear tree, and fixed it,
Now better but was still rough, ( when I drove it home it was smooth on the highway- only rough Idle) back to the story-- did a compression test, Nothing on #6 rest were 130-150 so i figured probly exhaust valve, (eventhough it didn't sound like it at the exaust) decided to pull engine and re-ring , valvejob & bearings, pulled heads found where some time in past itlooked like #6 Piston and rings were stuck to cylinder wall and the crack running around the wall- I think at one time it was overheated? it has new radiator, funny thing though No water in oil and did not run hot on way home ,the crack does not seem to leak, and and it had no unusuall noise very quiet , well anyway i do think putting another 460 in it is the way to go I did not realize how many there were I am finding them all over the place I just have to decide how much to spend and how far to go to get it.
Thanks for the input.
Scott
Are you sure it's a crack, and not just a scratch or mark from where a ring may been stuck? Might want to have the block checked by a machine shop, just to confirm it really is cracked.
It just seems unlikely that the cyl could be cracked, especially running around the wall, without either overpressurizing the radiator or getting water into the cyl and oil. This is even more true, if there was no compression at all in this cyl.
There's a lot of 460 engines that can be found fairly cheap. Just make sure any replacement has the provision for a mechanical fuel pump, if your truck is setup to use one. I think that by about 85, all 460 powered trucks used electric pumps, but it's better to be safe and check it out before jumping on a newer engine.
Going back with a 460 is the easiest way to go. Switching to any other engine would require frame brackets for the motor mounts, as well as accessory mounting brackets.

The provision is on the timing cover, and then runs off of the cam gear. My 83 doesn't have a mech. pump at all, although it's also a CA car where they do really bizarre stuff.
Well it sure looks like a crack it's curved and irregular and I can feel it with my fingernail but it is possible that it's not, I'll try to check closer but you can see where what looks like a ring was stuck to the wall in that spot and there is aluminum above it on the ridge I haven't pulled the pan yet to remove piston and inspect it probly should just to see.
