How much Smoke?

As long as we have all of these smoky threads going on, I thought I would ask about smoke myself.

I took the truck out on a road trip yesterday, first time after I have installed the stage 1's.

340 miles, horsing around on the way there first 150 miles and bucking a head wind coming home, averaged 15.6 mpg. I didn't think that was bad for the way I was running, 4:10 by the way. Only a couple of issues all day, first I got pulled over in a construction zone on the freeway, 67 in a 50 anyway I got a good brake he wrote me for 5 over (55 in a 50) $93 bucks later.

The second issue was I turned onto Hwy 2 going maybe 20mph I jumped on it in the 140hp mode WOT up until maybe 65 mph, I got a check engine lite. I did notice that the EGT had jumped up to almost 1600° for a bit as soon as a let off it came back down. After I shut it off and started again it was gone.

Anyway to the smoke question.

With stage a 4" Exhaust, Cat Delete, 6637 Intake, 6 Position TS Chip, Stage 1 Injectors just how much smoke should I be seeing?

I didn't try it in the 25 hp tow mode but in the 65 hp mode cruising say 55 mph get on it to pass a car and I get a good cloud of black smoke not real bad and it clears up once the boost gets up a ways maybe 15 to 20 Lbs. In the 100hp and 140hp modes it much worse. I have lots of power though and I like that, just curious about the smoke though and sense I don't have anything to compare it to I have know idea if it is right or wrong.

Tim

My guess is your code is a 1211, ICP to high and uncontrollable. I get it alot when I get into it and let off quick. If I don't let off quick, I don't get the code.

Thanks Glen,

I have an Actron code reader I got for my wife's Explorer I hooked up to my truck but it won't read anything. Do I need to unplug my chip first or is it just one of those things that won't work with my truck. In the menu it lists the 7.3L turbo diesel but it doesn't seem to work.

you should see plenty! even better when your running a bad or dirty VSS you'll be driving 20mph if fourth gear dumping out some serious smoke.

glen id guess he was seeing a low icp code, running out of pressure before he will get that uncontrolable icp code. a WOT run with a stock pump isnt that hardest thing to set LOL sounds like your truck is with the rest of us. get an intercooler to tame them EGTS and youll be fine.

yep get an ic to lower a bit and control it more with an ic the temp doesnt jump to 1500 it rises to 1500 more control and the smoke sounds about right for the chip

It is a Hot Rod DRZ400s, big bore 444cc, Edelbrock carb, Yoshimura Exhaust and a Rekluse clutch.

It's a fun motorcycle, it's not really perfect for any one thing but it works well for a lot of different stuff.
