I agree with Rick. I haven't done it because I don't want that smell emanating from my truck. If you clean your engine bay even half-way regularly (like once a year), the buildup of oily residue is not a problem.
I never did the CCV mod and bought my truck new. Where is the problem??

It should be perfectly fine if you run a closed system mod with a catch can. Thats what I did, keeps the engine shiny, and the air outside clean.

While I agree with that, I don't believe it hurts anything to run the vent to a catch can & back to the intake. I for sure don't want it vented to the atmosphere with the smell & comments at lights "hey your trucks smoking or leaking"...lol
I've run both, first w/o CCV mod then with CCV mod for 4 or so years now back to stock. I got tired of the smell and smoke so I switched back and almost instantly my engine bay was filthy. I drive over 1k mikes a week so my engine filthyness level may elevate quicker than some. I hand track mileage and never saw a difference....I wasn't expecting to either.
I don't think doing the CCV mod cleaned your engine like that. Like said, just clean the engine once a year and you will not have a problem.
I wasn't saying the ccv mod cleaned and painted everything in my engine Just showing how clean it keeps my engine bay now.
The dirty pics were taken about a year after I did my foil delete, at which time I cleaned all that crap up. Been running the ccv mod for about 4 months now and don't see a spot of oil in there. Even when pulling the intake or IC pipes, seeing no oil inside either.
I'm not saying do it or don't, personally though, I'd rather spend my free time drinking beer and hanging by the pool than cleaning crud off my motor.
I hear you chris. I don't get much blow-by when I take the oil filler cap off, so that may make a difference.
I'm like you with the beer, but I don't have a pool so I hang in my shop with the hood of my truck open and play with things. lol All good.
Rick, you've got one heck of a shiny engine for no ccv mod for sure! Mine may have been excessive due to all the desert trips allowing the dirt and sand to mix with the oil
If I had a nice shop area, I might split the time between pool and shop Definitely envious!
Even though my ccv mod keeps things less oily inside, I do still give it a quick once over with a rag, just to keep the dust off. Amazing how much easier it is to work on and diagnose with a clean motor.
after reading this thread, other than keeping the bay clean and stop the boots from seeping oil....what about the intercooler??with the oil build up, will this not be harmful over time????
Corey is a lil more into these engines and he was the only person that had ever mentioned build up from the ccv in the intake valves and such. As for innercooler I've heard some who have cleaned it and got a lil oil out and Jody told me once he had a guy drain his and got a quart or so. I have the upgraded boots on my truck and it stays clean with no ccv mod. My opinion welcome or not is I would like to see no oil running through the intake regardless if it makes my boots and pipes dirty. I don't want the oily coating holding on to extra heat and build up in the valves. A filter seems to be the closest thing to accomplishing this and maintaining a closed system. The other option I considered was routing it in the exaust but seems like bad things could come from that. Right now I'll leave it stock!
I removed the stock IC, and later a 6.0, and stood them on end. I left them like that for a week and got less than 1 "tablespoon" of oil from each one. My truck had the stock CCV for the first 100k miles and then the modified one with catch can for the next 80k. I see a little oil in the pipes when removing them, but no leaks at any of the connections. That seems to be good enough for me.
You know, now that I think about it, if you get ahold to a truck that looks like that chances are the service might not be up to par. Just saying if you've got someone who never checks his air filter and it gets clogged, your bound to start siphoning some oil out the crankcase. Just seems in the past where I go look at a truck to buy, under the hood is all dirty, check the air filter and what do you know, chock a block full. Rick is not the kind of guy to let his filter get clogged so maybe that's why he has less issues. Same thing for Roland. Just calling them out cause I know em a lil more than I know the rest of you!
