I've aquired a 1972 F100 4x4 with a 360, and am trying to change the fuel filter, but it is a cartridge on the mechanical fuel pump. Do I need anything special to get the canister off to replace it?

There was a special tool that went on a ratchet and fit the bottom of the cannister for removal, but I've never seen one outside of a magazine/catalog.
Best bet is to get it really clean, and then try a strap/belt wrench.

Hi Eric. I am from TN as well. If you can't get a strap wrench to work, you may have to take the fuel pump off and GENTLY use a large pipe wrench. That is what I had to do on my highboy. If you have PS, the fuel pump is harder to get too though.

Put anti-seize on the threads when putting it back on. Mine was stuck on hard right from the box and I made the NAPA guy take it out back in his store (they have a shop) and remove it before I left the store.
Since it has four detents in the bottom, off the truck, I would wrap it in cloth and use a pair of channel locks to twist it off.

The heck with that mech pump. I took it off, installed a block plate, and mounted an electric pump, and electric control valve for switching between tanks. Even left the concentric lobe off the camshaft when I rebuilt motor. No probs in the 6 yrs its been on there.
