rear end sag

98 Ranger XLT 4WD 4.0.....the other day I noticed the left rear end sagging. Looking under the truck I fount that on the left spring both ends of the bottom leaf were not touching the leaf next to it. On the right side all leafs were in contact with the leaf next to them. Any idea what may have caused this??? I haven't carried a load in over 2 years except for my snowblower in the winter time. The ride is still fine the truck just sits crooked at the rear. any easy repair for this???

Are you sure your rear hangers and shackles are not rusted out? That will cause it to sit uneven. It did on my 98'

btdrygulch: look at your springs where they are all clamped to the rear axle. There are four bolts that hold the spring packs to the rear axle on each side. You may see one or more springs broken if you look around the clamp area. The only way to fix that would be to replace each spring pack with a new one. And to make it equal, you should replace the spring pack on the other side even though it may not have any broken springs. Check for a spring shop in your area that services big trucks. They may have springs for smaller trucks or can get them. You could get some used springs but your likely to have the same problem all over again.

I agree ......most likely the hangers and shackles........get in there and take another look.....you can buy everything you need for less than $100......took me about 4 hours.......I pulled the bed.....I have a write up around somewhere if it is the Hangers and shackles.

* having a detailed signature helps DXing a lot.......if we knew your location and say it was Florida. I would guess your hangers and shackles would not be the issue.....and you most likely have busted worn springs.........however that is less common than the Hangers and shackles................

**I just looked up your profile.....you live in CT. most likely...... CT=rust=rotted hangers and shackles...

id agree on the hangers/shackles. best to do all 4 even if just one hanger has failed, the others wont be far behind.

Man, I just cannot understand how you guys can stand to live in the rust belt. Dad's truck has seen use during more than 30 winters, and has minimal rust issues over the rear wheelwells and barely any signs of rust around the cab mounts.

Because in a lot of the rust belt most of us have teeth, good schools and jobs.

Living in the Northeast

Yeah, the winters here can really do a number on your vehicle. I think it might be even tougher on the vehicles now that they lay down the liquid calcium chloride on the roads before the ice and snow. That nice slushy slurry it makes really sticks to the underside. That said, my 2000 body is almost rust free but the underside has its share. Cleaned the underside and steel brushed the loose stuff off and sprayed it with rust inhibitor. Only want to slow down the process of decay. Leaf springs look alright, but the open sided bracket (shackle?) looks a bit gnarly.

That's good, cause you have to replace vehicles far more often than us toothless stupid and lazy southerner's. We can keep them going for well over 40 years, so we can afford to spend money on other things too......

I'd take hurricanes, massive tornadoes and floods over 10 feet of snow in July

1)Snow, cold, rust, good teeth, good jobs, You don't marry your relative, good schools, they love Obama

2)Hurricanes, floods, tornado, no rust, no teeth, no good jobs, Marry your cousin, no good schools, They don't like Obama

3) they both suck....and so does Obama
