Headlight assembly mounting issues...need advice

I have a 94 Ranger (4x4 extended cab). My headlight assemblies are very dull and the seal is damaged on one light. So I ordered a set of headlights from Rock Auto parts and when I went to install them I noticed the new lights has only 2 mounting points or adjusting points where the mounting clips are attached to secure the light assembly to vehicle. I looked at the driver side light and it has 3 clips securing the light assembly to the car. Now, here’s the kicker. The passenger side headlight assembly has only 2 clips securing it to the car, but also has a rubber like grommet thingy on the bottom left side of the light housing (when facing front of car) that slips onto some sort of track like object to secure it to the body; this side appears to have been replaced.

Has anyone else replaced their headlights that had only 2 mounting points? If so, what did you do to secure the headlights to the vehicle? Is their some sort of conversion part that I am missing?

Has there been a design change with these headlights?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks…Al

Methodical 1,

Huh, that's a very peculiar problem. Were the replacement headlights from Rockauto.com OEM or after market? I know that oft times these humongous faceless auto parts sites will advertise that their parts are "OEM-level" quality but when in reality they fall far short of the rigorous quality standards adhered to be OEM parts manufacturers.

While I haven't had to replace my Ranger headlights as of yet, I found this diagram that MAY be of assistance to you: Part Detail

Perhaps someone else can weigh-in on this issue?

Blueoval, I don't know where the headlights came from. I bought the truck used about 6 or 7 years ago and these were on the truck. I went thru the site you provided a found a diagram of the headlight and it seems to show only 2 mounting points. Part Detail

Alright somebody's playing with my head here - weird. The repair manual states there's 3 mounting clips.

Thanks for the help and link

According to the LMCTruck catalog, the parts listings for 93-97 headlights shows two adjusters (one for horizontal and one for vertical adjustment) and an adjuster pivot. The adjusters have a screw showing, while the pivot does not.

In the light assembly that you received, particularly the one with three "adjusters," might the third "adjuster" actually be the pivot?

Let us know what you figure out on this.

Alright. I found the problem. I just checked the Ford Service Manual (CD) and I can see from the picture of the light assembly where the previous owner or whoever installed the passenger side headlight broke the up/down adjuster (bottom left when facing the light). I may be able to cannibalize some parts from the old light to work on the new unit or hit the junk yard to find the up/down adjuster.

Thanks for taking the time to help out.

I got in all worked out. I had to cannibalize the old light to make it work. I also I installed a new set of headlights...man what a world of difference - I can see the road clearly again.

You can brightn things up evenmore by installing a heavy duty headlight harness. LMCTruck has a set for $30 plus shipping. My world got much brighter after I put in a set and its easy to do.

Thanks for the tip. What else is needed to upgrade? Is it difficult to wire?

Thanks...Al

1. Everything you need is in the harness.

2. The directions are clear and each connector on the harness is clearly labeled.

3. It took me less than 1/2 hour to hook it up on my truck.
