I believe the magic number before head studs are needed is 40 psi.
Just a rule of thumb as far as I know. I have hit 40 quite a few times without studs and it held but it made me nervous.
I hit 50 psi a few times when I first ran twin turbos. Stock bolts, stock gaskets.
Really made be pucker, though, as you don't want to do that often.
If you have an intercooler the max psi is lower, probably around 40 psi should be max.
