My 2000 has the dreaded peeling on the black trim around the rear hatch handle.
Can this part be pulled off and painted, should I find a replacement (part number/price?)...ideas? What have you all done who have this problem and how to prevent it in the future?
X2 very easy to pull. Interior trim pulls off, just held by clips. Unclip the lock and latch levers by removing the green plastic retainers on the shafts and it unbolts with 6 or 8 bolts.
Sounds like the consensus is replace vs. rehab...$195 isn't as bad as I thought (provided my local stealership doesn't try to jack me around on the price).
I just recently rehabbed mine. Was easy, and only cost me some sanding time and spray paint. I put a layer of clear coat over the top, and it looks great. I did it while resealing the rear glass to the hatch due to a leak.
@nickmike , I rehabbed mine the same way. was going to do a friends as well but it is cracked from somebody trying to break in. Need to find a new one since the guys parting out ex's around here want to sell the hatch complete.
Ya no kidding. $175 bucks for a piece of plastic ? Wtf
I found a complete back hatch for $300. Looks like I will be adding to my spare parts inventory.
That is a good grab on the back hatch. They aren't made anymore, and if yours gets damaged in a wreck, you will have to source from salvage. Same goes for the barn doors.
I found a replacement un-peeling one in the junk yard, $10 or I think. I still have the old peeling / in need of re-hab one still sitting in the garage, if interested you pay the shipping....
