i have a 2001 ford f250 electronic shift on the fly 4x4 with the legendary 7.3. when i put it in 4x4 high or low my a/c quits blowing out of vents and goes through defroster. a mechanic buddy of mine traced the vaccum leak to a part located on passenger floorboard under glovebox. i have a pic of part but dont know how to post it on here, can anybody help

If I were you.........

I'd have your mechanic probably trace farther into the system, under the hood, and down to each front wheel hub.

Vacuum leaks are pretty rare inside the cab, but are notorious under the hood and wheel wells.

Got a little hand vacuum pump?

Pull vacuum lines loose and start there.

Did you check your hoses at the front hubs.. that where the most likely leak is..
But, to check this area you are trying to identify for leaks, disconnect the hose that goes "downward" towards your hubs from the vacuum tank and plug this disconnected line that goes back over the tank. Then see if your A/C works properly..

Definitely sounds like a vac leak in the ESOF system if the HVAC defaults to defrost when switched to 4X4.

As Clint suggested, you need to determine which hub or vac line to hub is leaking. Pull both vac lines at hub
and plug them. Switch to 4x4. If it does't default to defrost one of the hubs has a leak. Re-attach vac lines
one at a time to determine which one leaks. If it still defaults to defrost with both hub vac lines plugged then
the vac leak is toward the vac system.

I hate to say it, but your buddy is way off. The part pictured activates to recirculate door on max A/C. It has nothing to do with 4x4.

As others have said your problem is under the hood after the solenoid on the passenger fender that activates the hubs. Those are the only lines that have vacuum only in 4 wheel drive.

Edit: Payson beat me to it.

Thanks guys I'm gonna check hubs first and hopefully its minor. Thinking about plugging lines to front hubs and manually locking them in.

The guys here will know more about your truck than your mechanic buddy will ever be able to know. We live for these things, and it's a fun "hobby".

When you have a problem with it, ALWAYS start right here!

When you get ready to fix that leak, come back and see us.

Better yet, stick around and read, read, read!
