I love my e150 clubwagon, but like a good woman it needs constant attention....
heres the prob.... after shutting off the engine, the truck fails to start again, I have to wait until it has cooled down before it will successfully restart. This is a recent developmant. I bought the truck used and it has always disliked the heat. It has a tendency to stop running when it gets hot, the temp gauges registers in the middle, so its ok inside, i have to open the hood and let it cool off about 30 minutes before it will restart.
I will appriciate all advice on resolving this annoying problem
I'm not sure if a '93 has the EEC IV ignition system, but I've had similar problems with '83 thru '88 models and changing the ignition module fixed it in all cases.
Whoa... before you go through all that, my neighbor has a '92 Bronco w/ the 351 and had the same problem. After a while, his even got to the point that it'd suddenly die on him after it got hot and he'd have to sit and wait for it to cool down before it would restart. He took it to the local Ford dealer numerous times and each time they came back with a different answer. I know he ended up replacing the fuel filter, the ECU, the battery cable (they said it wasn't getting enough juice to the ECU) and the IAC.
It ended up being the IAC not working correctly after it would get warm up from the engine heat. At least that was the last I heard but I'll ask him tonight to make sure it truly solved his problem once and for all. Anyway, just wanted to let you know to hold up before replacing the whole ECU and the frustration remains. I'll post back tomorrow with what he says.
I'm not sure what the IAC is, but just to avoid confusion, the ignition module I mentioned is not the main computer (ECU?), but the small unit attached to the side of the distributor. Is that the IAC?
NO, IAC or Idle Air Control, also called the IRAC, Idle Return Air Control, attached to the side of the throttle body, and will bypass the throttle butterlies on deceleration so the engine won't stall. The ignition control module is either in the distributor or on the firewall.
Sounds like the typical distributor mounted module problem. Ford had a recall on these, not sure if the '93 was in it.
The recall covered a bunch of years. People had complained about this module going bad, leaving them stalled in serious situations, so Ford was forced to do a recall.
I just read a post which talked about when a coil starts going bad it will totally malfunction when the heat goes way up, Milage on my existing coil is about 160,000 miles.
Sorry for the delay in posting back, the weekend was a bit hectic and I wasn't able to hop online.
I spoke with my neighbor and he believes it was in fact the grey Ignition Module on the distributor (sometimes found on the firewall but I'm not sure what years were where). It was after he replaced the module that he discovered the code for the IAC valve and had to replace it, so that's apparently where I was getting my information mixed up.
Sorry to confuse everybody but I just didn't want AmexJoe to begin replacing parts that may not correct the problem.
The ignition module is called a TFI-IV I believe.
(TFI being Thick Film Integrated).
Earlier ones were on the left side of the distributor, and is grey in color. When Ford discovered they broke down under the heat, they moved them onto the fender (where it still breaks down).
Start it up, and use a heat gun on it (wife's hairdryer works fine too!) & it should fail if it's bad.
Don't forget some good heat sink compound when you do replace it.
