Mysterious hole

There's a strange hole about 1.4" dia on the back of my '54 F100's cab, about 20 or so inches below the rear window, just around the corner from the drivers door.
Would there have been any kind of factory (or aftermarket) option available in '54 that would require a hole like this?
Or has my truck been through the ravages of one of the infamous industrial strength morons so eloquently described by Fatfenders?

There is a rubber plug that goes in the hole. There should be one on each side aligned with the rear cab mount under the cab. By removing the plug, you can access a bolt to loosen the cab mount from the frame instead of crawling under the cab. That the hole you taling about??

Thanks Ranger, but thats not it. Those are down in the cab corners. This one is about even with the door handle behind the cab, and there's only one. It was beautifully filled with bondo when I bought the truck. Didn't notice it till later.
No big deal though. I'm gonna weld a patch in.
But since I found the hole, I've sat and wondered what could that hole have possibly been used for?

If it's above the level of the top rail of the front bed panel, I'll bet it was for a 2 way radio antenna. Alot of companies back then used the F-100's for foreman trucks, power company meter readers, etc... Back then, people used the trucks for work, not as pleasure vehicles as we do today.

My 55 has a hole there but not as big as what you describe.....it had a wire running from it to back up lights installed at the rear, activated by a toggle switch drilled into the center of the dash

Mueller, my 56 cab has a similar hole in the same position but it is only about 1/4" in diameter. I just figured it was from a radio antenna as mentioned before. Hmmmm... very interesting..

Thanks guys. bmccl, I think you may have gotten it. But now that you mention the bed rail, the hole is lower than that but outboard enough where an antenna would still fit there.

I was thinking about it again while ago, and then I thought
:-staun A shotgun barrel would fit right in there and could be operated by the driver :-staun :-staun

Shine runner maybe?

Naw, I figure it was just an antenna hole.

Mysterious hole

Mine is about 2" diameter and goes through both the back of the cab and the bed front panel. I've always wondered what it was for. The only thing I could think was a stash hole for the guys
dope if he ever got pulled over, the bed had a toneau cover on it previously so anything dropped back there would be out of site. I don't know how you could get your arm back behind the seat while sitting in it and not look obvious to law enforcement.
Whatever they used it for, it looks like they just took a bi-metal hole saw and blew through both panels.
Any more ideas?
Later,
Wilson

Whatever you do, don't put your arm into it. It could be a portal to an alternate dimension!
