Swapping Trannies
I need help. I have a 1988 F150 w/300 4.9L 6 cyl. I have the 5speed Mazda tranny that has no reverse or overdrive. The engine has about 213,000 miles on it but runs like a sewing machine.
I want to pull the manual transmission out and put an AOD in it.
The AOD is coming out of a merc marquis and was told that it would bolt up to the 4.9L since it is coming off of a 302.
What do I need to do to swap it out?
i.e., Driveshaft, Trans mounts, etc....
I do know that automatic columns are very few and far between here where I live, however, I thought about using a Ford Aerostar Minivan Automatic Floor shifter since they are cable actuated.
Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
You can do a search under transmissions, and my name, I did this swap and gave some descriptions there.
if you lost OD and reverse the shift fork or something simple might have failed and be an easy fix.
His '88 column is not like the '92-96 column - he can't add the shifter to it. And autos don't use a flywheel - just a flexplate.

The AOD isn't electronic. It's controlled strictly by the shift lever and the TV cable.

While a car AOD will bolt up to your engine, your t-case won't bolt up to IT. You need either a 4WD transmission, or you'll have to have the GM AOD rebuilt into a 4WD. I have a tail housing, but not the shaft. You could probably make the floor shifter work, but I'd expect it to be a lot more trouble than finding an auto column to swap in. I also have several crossmembers & an AOD trans mount.
