Hello all! Have any of you guys installed a T170F behind an 8BA using the original clutch/throwout assy. (1950 F1) or is it even possible? Thanks in advance for response....

I have not, but I've looked into it. I think you need this bell housing:MEC - We're Only '32 - Bell Housing

I did not find another flathead to dual pattern bell housing adapter for use with this style clutch setup. Also, I wasn't convinced that the transmission would fit without cutting the cross member. My plan is now to install a 3.00:1 ratio nine inch rear axle and a T87D heavy duty three speed.

thanks for the response. I agree, didn't want to modify crossmember and I also wanted to keep the original rearend. I have a T5 but we know what happens to the crossmember with that install. Anymore suggestions for an OD trans?

I think the 3.31 ratio ring and pinion from a 51 Mercury with an automatic transmission will go into the F-1 rear axle, but I'm not 100% sure. Given the short transmission space I don't know of an overdrive that will fit. I like to keep things stock too. My brother has a very nice restored 50 F-1 with the stock 3.92 rear axle. Doing the math, a 3.00 axle ratio is where we want to be. Given the very tall rear axle ratio the transmission needs to have a lower first gear to compensate. The stock heavy duty three speed, the T87D, has the desired ratios to go with the 3.00 axle ratio. The original axle is a Dana 41, and these developed into the Dana 44. I don't know if a Dana 44 ring and pinion can be made to work with the original axle or not.

Dick/4TL8Ford measured the T170's in a thread some time ago, and they were about 2" longer than the T86 as I recall. Depending how you do the rear mount, major surgery might not be necessary on the crossmember. An Advanced Search on 4TL8Ford and SROD might pull it up.
