broken fan switch?

Hi again!
My buddy has a 97 Ranger with 200K (?) Anyway, he only has the high "gear" left on his fan switch. Low and medium slowly left it over the last 2 years. Whats up with that? What do you all think? What could it be and how easy can drunks with 20 dollars can fix it?

Blower resistor is bad, located on front of heater box under hood, about $12.00 to replace.
