lost luggage

heres the scenario, I send wife and son with 2 suitcases down to Texas for a visit. Week later they come home minus 1 suitcase. American Airline says they tracked it and will arrive later and they will bring to my home. Wife calls up later on and is told that they have no idea where it is and to wait a week and file a claim. Do they actually pay full value, or at all? Made a list of all contents and it does add up esp with ipod home among list. Thankfully all electronics were in carry on possession or could have been really high.
Anybody ever have any dealings with this situation? I dont want to just write it off.

I've had lost luggage on way home. It took AA a few days to find it and return it to me. Luckily it was just clothes. The bags came back beat to heck, but still useable. I'd hate to have to file a money claim. With all the extra fees and charges I wonder if anyone really does get monies for lost luggage?

If you never get your bags back, maybe you could swing by here to maybe see your clothes for sale on a rack here:

Check the airlines web site for rules. They have a liability limit. I think it is $250/bag, but I could have the value wrong. I am positive it is not unlimited, or based on value of contents.

This stuff used to be printed on the back of your boarding pass. Not it is mostly paperless.

Oops, I was way off. It is $3,300/passenger for domestic.
