I noticed a strange noise today and I was wondering if anyone has some ideas. When I was going between 30 and 45 mph I noticed a clanking noise today. If I let off the pedal and coast for a second it happens when I hit the gas (diesel) again. Just as I put power to the engine I get this clank and can feel a small jerk. I was thinking the drive shaft or rear end? I can only get it to do it around those speeds. It seems that at all other speeds the truck slowly grabs as I apply pressure to the pedal but at around 30-45 the truck bites hard and I get that clanking noise. It may have been doing this for some time but I just noticed it today. Looking for any ideas on source…
It could either be the center support bearing (carrier bearing) or the u-joints in the driveshaft. I know mine was making a similar noise and I found out it was the reat u-joint
Any ideas on how to determine the location? I’m wondering if it could be backlash in the rear end…. It will have to wait, I'm getting ready to pull the camper and I can't get it to the shop. Say a prayer for me LOL
Climb under there with the truck in park (auto) or low/reverse (manual). And start pulling, pushing, and twisting on the driveshaft. If one of the u-joints is bad you will be able to tell which one it is.
I know its a stretch, but if you dont have any luck with the drive shafts or carrier bearing check your exhaust hangers. I had one loose and it made a noise similar to what you're describing. The hanger was hitting the frame during acceleration. Until I crawled under there and poked around, I too, thought it was a u-joint or even the TC rattling. Good luck.
