I have a 1986 F150, when I first start it up there is an ear piercing screeching sound that goes on for about 10 minutes, it will finally stop once the engine warms, but everytime the engine is shut off and re-started it happens again. I have had the belts checked by a local mechanic who said the belts were too tight and it rectified the problem only for a short period of time, like a week. I have put Belt conditioner on the belts, to no avail. Anyone out there have any idea what this screeching noise could be or how to fix it? Thanks
You could just try unhooking the belts and turning the accessories by hand to feel the bearings.
Also, I have a 135 amp alternator. It does the same thing until the battery catches up with the charging (I only have it on one v-belt instead of two).
Consider the harmonic balancer. My son's 1984 4.9L did the same. You can make a mark across the balancer with a crayon or marker and then drive. Later, check to see if the "line" has shifted. If so, the rubber has broken down.
