A/C Rage
Well today I took the 1977 F150 4x4 400 CID out to get a bite to eat and I notice something odd about the air.I noticed that the air would still blow on high even though the switch was moved to off, I didn't think the motor was supposed to be blowing with the controls switched to off....I am so frustrated guys..... when I turned it on it would blow harder the faster I accelerated and when I would slow down it would decrease in air flow until finally the a/c just cuts off completely and now the compressor won't even cut on when I move the switch to a/c.
Is there anything I can check before I put it back in the shop tomorrow? I really hate being without my truck as I am restoring her and everyday without her sucks. I am leaning towards something he screwed up with the wiring but I am not sure. Any assistance is appreciated
I only say this cause just this week I had to trouble shoot my blower problem after an a/c charge on a full resto job and discovered the connection from the harness to the motor pig tail had failed and melted from amperage draw.
So when I "hot wired it" it really took off faster and louder than normally hooked up so I am ASSUMING the resister it is feed from that is controlled by the switch is there for good reason.
You don't want to hear this but I'm thinking you probably didn't need a new motor either but thats how times have gotten with the economy now, and its hot out you've got a nice "OLD'' truck "that parts are hard to find for" and the shop is probably slow so you made their day. Tell them you want your old motor to have tested and as a comparison to even see if they replaced it in the first place. Heck look around under the dash and at the firewall and see if any screws have been out or you duct work under the dash has been put back correctly. I can tell you first hand the bellows from the a/c box to the passenger side kick panel is a biotch to hook back around the plastic lip on the backside of the box so see if they got it back on.
The motor is only $78.00, now go kick some a$$
. I talked to a mechanic friend of mind and was telling him the situation and when I mentioned the guy killed my battery he just smiled and said I guarantee you he didn't charge your battery back up, he just jumped it off and the alternator was putting too much current out for the battery to handle with the a/c on and it blew the fuse, sure enough I replaced the fuse and everything started working again but I turned it off quick and put a charger on the battery. It says it should only take 3 hours to fully charge it and I am almost on the 4th hour now and still no green light so yeah my battery was super low. Just wanted this documented in case anyone has a similar problem in the future. By the way, he f'd with my duct work and I have some missing screws now....
. Never using that guy again.
