Automatic Transmission Question

Ok,Ive rebuilt the engine and reinstalled,I got it started and even drove it around the block, the transmission was slipping so I check the fluids and it was low,I added fluid ,started the truck and now I cant get it to shift into any gear,as matter of fact I can shift at the coulumn freely back anf forth with out pressing down the break, yes the linkage is attached to the transmission,I got under the truck and had my wife move the shift,I did have the keys in my pocket so she wouldnt be temptedanyway Its like the linkage isnt connected but it is,it shifts freely with out depressing the break,it has fluids and it just will not shift into a gear.PLEASE HELP Oh its a 1986 Full size Bronco.

You should really be asking this in 80-86 but the guys here are pretty good and can prolly help.

I didn't know Ford had integrated the brake light switch into the shifting capability so early? By 1986?

Are you sure it's supposed to work that way?

In any event, what did you find while looking underneath while your wife moved the shifter? Was all the linkage moving, or not?

Seems odd that merely adding fluid to the transmission would render it useless, something else must be wrong....

if you have the newer column, that forces you to put the brake on before pulling it out of park, look on the colum where the gear shift sits. at that sopt there are 2 torques screws that come loose. tighten them up while the shifter and the trans are in park, and you will be back in bussness

Just reinstalled the engine. Makes me wonder if the torque convertor was fully seated. If not, you may have killed the trans.
