I grabbed a fluid reservoir at the JY the other day that's different than the one in my '80 F100 300 I6. I cleaned it up and then compared it to what I have by looking in the LMC catalogue. It looks like the one in my truck (left image) is for a Diesel F250 83-91 while the new one (right image) is for a 85-86 or 87-91 Gas. I'm curious to know what the original fluid reservoir for the 1980 F100 looks like. The one I have now seems to work but I wonder why the Gas model is sealed and the radiator overflow hose enters at the bottom of the tank. Anyone have some information on these reservoirs and if I can use the newer (right image) one?
The top siphon style is what my 80 F150 300 has as well. The drawback to this type, everytime you take off the radiator cap, the hose drains into the bottle. Easier to add a bit of coolant to the bottle.
The bottom feed type will work just fine, so long as it bolts on the same. The drawback to this type, if the hose falls off or develops a leak, the bottle runs dry. Harder to add coolant, because you have to pop out that little rubber plug first.
Otherwise, they pretty much function the same, catch the coolant as it expands during warm engine operation and the cap bypasses the excess PSI, then allows the system to draw coolant from bottle as the system cools down.
