Pulling engine and trans

Am getting ready to pull the engine and trans on my 76 highboy f-250. Question is where to bolt chain to engine block to lift. Also, can I pull with trans attached. I have front clip off. Or should I pull trans first. I removed shift lever and cover from the NP435 already. Any and all words of wisdom will be greatly appreciated.

When I did it I pulled them seperately. Disconnect trans (bellhousing, driveshaft, shifter) first. Then unhook everything from the engine (wires, headers, accessories, etc.). I use a carb plate to lift engines. It's just a thick plate that attatches to the intake where the carb is. Bolt up to carb plate, unbolt mounts and away it goes. Then you unblot the tranny mounts and you're able to move it forward and remove from underneath between the crossmember and axle. Pretty painless for me.

I just did this today, for the 2nd time this eng. Pulled the replacement on mon so....

Separate the trans and use the heads to attach the chain. 5/8 bolt in the inner or outer bolt holes in the ends. Fwd r/h, rear l/h, if you have A/C. No a/c, then as long as they are crossed (one chain) L to R you will be ok.

Chain to the heads ='s no money on a carb plate.

Carb plate ='s ? 4 7/16 bolts to hold 700+lbs, and what if you remove the heavy cast iron intake manifold, then what? Anyway, everyone has there own way of it.

I would separate the eng and trans to make it lighter, depending what you are using to pull them. If you have a overhead hoist (with a good weight rating) pull together.

But I would still separate for ease of removal of eng, IMO. Trans on a trans jack or good floor roller jack with a strap securing it. Or eng puller thru the door window with the hump cover removed, and a jack.

Hope I didn't confuse you, just be careful that stuff is HEAVY!

If you don't have a carb plate, or some people just don't like them, by all means chain to heads as 77&79F250 said.
I forget not everyone has scrap and such laying around. lol I just plasma cut a piece of 1/2" steel that was laying around and welded on a hole to hook to. What's handy for me might not be for you.

You almost need a carb plate and hoist just to take that fat intake off anyways Rich. That or eat your spinach, make this face and hopefully not blow a head gasket in the old brain. lol
