BRAKE LIGHTS
Lost my brake lights. The signals work on both sides. I haven't checked the fuse yet but I figure that is the first thing to check. What should be my next step?
I looked at the wiring in back ( tail lights / rear harness ) and there are three wires running to each light. Also, it has a trailer brake harness which hasn't been used in at least 3 years.
Check for voltage at the brake pedal switch. If you have no voltage on either wire, then you probably do have a fuse problem. You should have voltage on one wire all the time, and voltage on the other wire only when you push on the pedal.
If all that checks out, then you need to concentrate on the turnsignal switch. The wire from the brake switch goes up to the turnsignal switch. The turnsignal switch's job is to mix the turnsignal flasher signal with the brake light signal, and route it to the proper rear light.
You should have a wire coming into the turnsignal switch from the brake pedal switch, that has power when you press the pedal(the later trucks used a lightgreen, not sure about a 72). When the switch is in the middle position, you should have this same voltage coming out on the two wires that go to the rear when the pedal is pressed.
