Why More Regen?

I have read some previous threads talking about the different regen frequencies between trucks. I did not come across one that described what I was looking for. I have a '08 6.4 job 1 with 54k. I purchased with 41k miles on it. Up until a couple of months ago the regens were like clockwork - every 275-300 miles. A couple of months ago I noticed they were around 240 miles, then 220, and the last 2 were at 180 miles apart. The meassage stays on for 11-12 miles and completes which has not changed. Blackstone report is good, tailpipes are clean, and truck runs normal and does not smoke at any time. I use DK every 3-4 tanks. The only difference is in March we bought our 5er and have pulled it on some short trips. I talked to the Ford diesel mechanic 2 weeks ago when getting a service and his response was 'your drving habits have changed'. That is BS - what a poor response. Any thoughts on why the increased frequencies between regens? Sorry for being longwinded - thanks for any replies.

Now what are you calling BS here? The claim that driving habits influence regen frequency or the fact that you have or have not changed your driving habits?

To me the BS was the tech telling me that my regens are more frequent because my driving habits have changed. He did not know because he did not ask and instead made a diagnosis. Sorry about any confusion. That conversation is in the past. I am still wondering why the regens are more frequent.

You using different fuel? I know for a fact if I use anything other than Shell or Chevron, my regens are all over the place with low cetane fuel.

I'm also using DK. I seem to notice unless I use it consistently, it won't help much. Anything less than the recommended 80oz/250gallon dosage doesn't seem to do anything.

Right now, I'm running about 0.4oz/gallon of DK and my regens are 300-350miles apart for the same driving/routes I normally take. That's up from 250-300miles.
However, it's not clear to me if summer fuel has anything to do with that yet. I'll know more this coming Oct/Nov when winter fuel comes out..

Everything seems to be ok based upon your discriptions. Perhaps fuel quality, where you got it that sort of thing.

Pulling the 5er will do it as well.

So far there is nothing that needs to be done. As long as your oil reports are good, tail pipes are clean I think you are fine.

I have a Job 1 also, same year and about the same mileage. Same thing happened to me, regens about the same as the OP, as I went along the regens became closer together especially after I started pulling the 5er. On my trip to Colorado last summer, I stopped at a Loves and filled with B5 in Clayton NM. The truck was never the same. Regens were relentlessly every 100 miles or so. I thought it was just altitude and incline. I changed filters, drained water, oil and etc. I let it go until a few months ago and took it in. Cracked DPF and the also installed a new PCM, not just a flash but physically a new PCM. All better now, rengens back to 300-400 miles empty, pulling the 5er, 200-300 miles and pulling it pretty hard. Getting ready to leave to Colorado again and will see how it works this time. One thing for sure, not filing up at Loves in Clayton,NM.

You mention you are pulling your 5er sometimes. My experience on the same truck as yours (job 1) is a regen every 100 or so miles when towing and a much longer but variable distance when not towing. If I have some towing and some non-towing then the distance is somewhere in the middle. I think you say the regen message stays on. If that's the case your truck is a couple flashes behind. The message should only be on for a few seconds unless you meant you use the message center buttons to keep up with it. I am certain that after getting the 11B23 flash my interval shortened but I haven't tracked it enough to state numbers. To me it makes sense that the interval would change, it is based on how much soot (particlulate matter) the truck is making and that depends on a lot of factors, like what you towed/carried and what the terrian was, how many cars you passed, the blend and quality of your fuel and last but not least your driving style. You might also be making a bit more soot as the truck ages. However, like Sennix said it doesn't sound like there is a problem.

Gearitis - did your pipes turn black?
I may be making somehting out of nothing but I have learned that 'if something does not seem right it usually isn't'. I will continue to monitor regen frequency and wait for my next OA to return. Then I may get the latest flash.
