Has anyone here used a tilt colum from a 80+ ford truck? If so, did you wire the colum to use the key on the colum? I have read a couple of articles on the internet and there is not alot of information. One person says not to use the shifter on the colum. They go on to say use a floor shifter. Is it overly difficult to wire the colum to use the key on the colum?
Steve, Thats waaaay too much work!!! Looks good though.
You can use the ignition switch on the column. If you can read a wiring diagram, you just need to mate the wires from the original switch to what is coming from the column for the switch. It isn't too difficult, it just takes a little time to do it right. If you give me the exact year of the truck you get the column out of, I can give you an idea of what wires go to where for the turn signal switch, horn and the ignition switch.
You can use the column shifter for the automatic. You may need to modify your shift linkage a little bit, but it will work nicely. I have never been a fan of aftermarket floor shifters because they just aren't user friendly. And leaving it on the column gives it a stock appearance.
Thanks jason and steve for your reply. Hey steve, you look like you have a very nice set up on that bronco. But I am just a simple man and really don't want to go as far as you did with the colum you installed. I just want to attempt to use the items the colum came with.
Jason, I got the colum out of a 81 or 82 f-350. A buddy of mine has a book that I am going to use to attempt to rewire the colum. I do have part of the wiring harness from the donor truck. The turn signals and horn I am not really worried about. The neutral/start switch kind of has me baffeled. Will the neutral and back up light swithch work? It would be nice since I do not currently have one at this time.
The neutral safety switch and the back up light switch is on the trans itself (auto, right?). So it will work the same as the dash switch. I am getting ready to leave for the weekend but I will
get something to you Sun or Monday.
If you notice the dates on the pics & albums, you'll see that they go back several years. I don't have NEARLY that much time these days. A fulltime job (sucks being a grown-up ) & living with my gf () take up most of what used to be my play time.
Thanks Jason for the breakdown of the wires. I was looking at the tilt colum this morning and saw that there were quite a few extra wires. There are two that I am worried about. The red/light green and the yellow. On the tilt wheel there is two yellow wires, same size. Then red/light green there are two wires, different sizes. Any Ideas on these??
Yes the 2 yellow wires. My diagram shows that they are one wire that goes into two. But it could be wrong. Either way, both of the yellow wires need the same 12V from the + side of the starter solenoid.
According to my diagram, one of the red/green wires connects with the brown/ pink wire at the switch and goes to a throttle actuator. It gets 12V when the switch is in the start position, so it's not really necessary.
The other red/green wire connects to the white/ light blue wire at the ignition switch. It is energized in the run position. This is the circuit that feeds the ignition coil.
It will take a little investigation and wire tracing, but you should be able to easily figure out which wires you are wanting.
Hopefully the last question on this. When you say "both of the yellow wires need the same 12V from the + side of the starter solenoid" do you mean I have to have both yellow wires hooked up on the tilt wheel in order for it to work?
Thanks!!
Later Duane
There is a yellow wire in the Bronco harness at the ignition switch. It comes from the fusible link on the positive side of the starter solenoid. Both of the yellow wires on the column need to be hooked to this wire. They both supply 12 volts through the ignition switch for different circuits. So they both need to be hooked up for all accessories and circuits to function properly.
Does that make better sense?
Thanks again. I will see what happens this weekend.. It depends though, if I get the right parts from bronco graveyard(going on three weeks) I will be rebuilding the rear end.
