68 f100 steering question

Hello and thanks for reading. I have a 68 f100 4.9l I6. It has 3 on the tree manual trans. The shifter housing was loose and so naturally I wanted to fix it. A friend of mine said it was the bushings inside. I looked at all the local part stores and online to find these bushings and could not. Well after taking the steering wheel and shifter housing off today, I found metal shavings inside, and I don't see how the bushings would keep the shifter housing tight to the piece that is behind the steering wheel. Also when I was screwing around with it, the tube that the shift lever pins into dropped a little and I pulled on it and it damn near came all the way out. I wonder if I messed anything up there. Any advise would be greatly apreciated. Thanks..Bill

Thank you

Thanks a million JoWilker. Thats just what I needed. I'll call them tomorrow morning. After looking at it some more, it seems like the housing itself is wore out. I appreciate the response, thanks again Jo.
