Expedition hatch door doesn't open

Used the rear hatch yesterday and then drove about 15 miles and the thing won't open. Can hear the lock cycle either using remote or power button. Handle will open the glass.

How do you get inside this thing to work on it?
Thx
TC

Better than the 12 gauge. Neighbors might think I was frustrated.

Seriously though, I've never had to do this, but I've been told you can remove the interior panel even with the hatch closed. If you have a 3rd row seat, I'd fold down the 2nd row and slide the 3rd row up to get it out of the way. After that, remove both rear interior side panels, then remove the rear hatch panel. Once the hatch panel is off, reach inside the door and release the latch mechanism.

I was able to remove the hatch panel without needing to remove the side panels. You just start at the top and carefully pop the panel away from the hatch shell. The plastic is flexible enough to be worked out from the hatch frame.

Your cable has broken, and it's a pretty straightforward fix from there.

Trim pulled back but unable to see much (anything) and the brail system is very limited. Any diagrams to show how mechanism works? Tricks?

I just checked the factory manual and the illustrations are shall we say, substandard. My best suggestion is to find the cable, follow it to the end, and try to manipulate the lever the cable is attached to. Your goal is to unlock the hatch, then you can open it using the exterior handle. (I think...it's been a while)

Thumbs up 2003 Ford Expedition - Replace Rear Hatch Cable

All,
I have little auto experience but am trying to learn more. I tackled this job and was able to find the broken cable. However, it appeared the part number listed above was not was my local ford dealer sold me.

Here is the part number I purchased - perfect fit: 2L1Z-7843870-CA
It cost about $45 and took me about 15 minutes to replace.

I hope this helps someone - I sure appreciate everyone else's help.
Have a nice weekend,
Greg
