well i went out friday to start my truck and it would not start untill the glow plugs went off.
i tested the batterys , they were 12.2.
with the motor running testing at the alternator wire it was 13. volts.
i had my altarnator rebuilt on the 9 month last year and it was putting out good.
it was hot just sitting there with out it being ran for a few days. so i guess it has some sort of short or something.
i called the guy who rebuilt it and i have a year warranty,
i pulled it off this morning after church and will drop it off on the way to work in the morning.
ill see how long it last, but my next one will be oem.
i just hope it did not kill my batterys they or only 2 years old
BARRY
ya im back at it. my boss had alot of welding back logged.
pure gravy. 10'' sch 40 header with 8'' sch 40 saddle in's
stainless that heavy can take the heat and get some good gold and blue in the weld.
the last few weeks iv been on 6'' sch 10. not to bad , 2 passing them they go fast.
i do get stove up being bent over all day welding. i have to stop alot and straighten up.
i do hope they get my alternator fixed this time
The alternator being hot even before starting is almost certainly the sign of a shorted diode.
Since he'sgoing to have to install a new diode pack, see if the guy will install the Schottky heavy-duty diode pack in your case, even if it costs you the difference in cost (less than $10). They are better diodes, and can take more abuse from over-current and heat.
thanks pop.
i know nothing about alternators but i knew it should not be hot.lol
ill drop it off before they open and call them when later.
ill see if the can do something better this time.
I am in the same boat. I have had charging system issues(light flashes ranomly at start-up and comes on itermittingly) I am going nuts. I had my brother drive the truck last week to the guy who I bought the hgih amp alt from and he tested it as Good.
I am strongly thinking the two wire pitgtail is faulty. Seems our 02's are alt eating demons
it must be that time of year, mine went out last week driving to work. my battery light came on so i stop at gas station to check wires and plug, i had the turbo off to reseal pedistal and thought i must of left something loose. everything tight n ok but truck would not restart. i got lucky and one of our field techs pulled in to get coffe and was able to charge it abit and start it and get to work. i tested it at lunch and only getting 12.2v at alt. not the best situation to be in, i opted for a napa alt mainly because they would deliver and had two year warranty. i put it on after work and have not had any problems but cross my fingers and see. i would have preferred to go oem because that was my original alt and it lasted 100k and +10years.
well all is well again. i droped it off and called the owner of the shop.
when i picked it up after work he said it all looked good but he replaced the diode and i think coil.
it was under warranty so it was free and no hassel.
he did not give me a new warranty though. but when it goes out the next time im going oem anyway.
i charged batts last night. when i put it on this evening it chanked like a champ, so i guess it didnot kill my batterys.
i checked and at the alternator wire and grounding at the batt i got 14.42 and 14.32 at batterys.
i hope thats good and it last me a while longer.
i think i can talk the wife into duel alternator setup next time so i need to start saving.
anyone know how much it would cost or if its worth having two alternators.
What constant additional demands are you putting on the charging system?
That will go a long way toward determining whether you need additional capacity, as the stock system is more than adequate for an unmodified truck's needs.
well last night my batterys were down so i charged them a few hours.
i drove my work car today, and checked the truck system this evening and it cranked with the glowplugs on so the batterys seem ok.
well i was going to check voltage and one of the case bolts on the alternator was backed all the way out and the other 2 were finger tight, glad i looked.
ill check them in a few days , if they or loose ill put some locktight on them.
