hello. I just got aceess to a 302 v8 out of a wrecked 95 f150 that i am dropping into a 94 f150. the engine and tranny has 20,000 on it and has not been ran since 98, Is there anything i should do to the engine before I start it up. It still has plenty of oil in it. Also is there any mods anyone can suggest to make more power out of this engine, Does anyone knoew the power ratings for the 95 302?
If it were me i would spend the money and get a valve grind gasket set and an oil pan gasket. I would then pull the intake and heads and drop the oil pan just to check out how the engine looks like inside. I might even replace the front and rear main seals while I'm at it.
I would hate to put an engine into a vehicle and find out it's bad or has an oil leak, etc.

Unlikely to need a valve grind with only 20,000 miles.
I suppose you should take out the distributor, and run the oil pump drive with a drill motor to prime the oil supply. However you will then need to be able to figure out how to reinstall the distributor in the correct position afterward.
On the other hand, you could just try to start it. Unlikely to do much harm.

I'm not telling him to have a valve grind done but to get the gasket set so he can pull the intake and heads. Any engine that has sat for over 12 years may still be OK to run but why take a chance! Open it up and look inside so that you are sure there is no rust on the cylinders bores or valve seats. Replace the seals as they may have dried out.
I would at the minimum, change the oil. 12 years of sitting may cause the oil to form a glop that won't pump. If it's thick, it would be a good idea to drop the pan and clean it up. Remove the distributor and prime the system before you crank it. It would a shame to damage an engine needlessly.
