My dad has his first car. A 1979 Bronco Ranger XLT. He just got a newer 1996 Bronco because he gave me the 79. Here in california it doesnt pass smog with it's 351m which is a 400. He wants to replace it with a newer 460 engine. It will de-value what the truck is worth tho.
So would a 1979 Ford 460 smog in california better than the 351m (400)?
The 351 has a 4BBL carb and a high performance cam with dual exaust. It was a lemon from the factory so my dad had to do a little tinkering with it. I think the engine is great besides the fact it doesnt pass california smog.
I dont think an EFI 460 will de-value a 73-79 truck. Its not like you see them crossing the line at Barrett-Jackson on a regular basis.
You either have a 351m or a 400. A 351m is not magically a 400 because it has the M behind the numbers. From an outside appearance they are identical engines.
I dont know anything about smog engines other than rip it all off and start making horsepower. Maybe someone here can help you detune your current engine or make some suggestions otherwise.

not sure if u mean de-value because of the 460 it self or that it will no longer be Original ? but as for a the EFI 460 a new motor up grade/mod in one point would add value to this SUV (maybe not in California) in most all parts of the US a mod or upgrade means that it improve the mechanical value now on the classic side look at all the road rats and hot rod they are not all old school or Original they are high tech engine's !! if the gold is to make it pass then I would say put the EFI 460 in it and if u are keeping the truck dont let the de-value stop u if u can not drive it why have it if u try to sell it and it won't pass would that not de-value it with the 351 hope this helps and make sense ?
Its a bored out 351m, sry about the confusion. And it will smog if you take it to a guy who will overlook the aftermarket things done to it. And what they do is tweak the gas down to where the engine barely runs and when it passes they turn it back up.lol Its a pain to keep doing that tho. California has some really stupid laws and regulations.
The difference between a 351m and a 400 is the crank. The bore is identical but not the pistons.
400 = 4" bore x 4" stroke
351 = 4" bore x 3.5" stroke
assuming .060 over (probably max safe overbore - not sure on this family) youve got about a 362.
How often will you have the SMOG deal inspected? What if you painted the intake the same color as the block? It shouldnt be that difficult to detune this thing because it doesnt sound like its something incredibly radical.
you cant bore a 351 to a 400, stroke sure, bore no. "turning the gas down to where it barely runs", not really sure what that means but im sure if the motor is barely running then thats part of your problem right there.
My Dad said it cam from the factory bored to a 400. And when they turn the gas down to where it barely runs, it puts out less whatever they check for when they smog your car. When it passes, they turn it back up. It also doesnt pass visual because we changed it out to a dual exaust, new cam, and intake manifold with 4BBL carb. Idk what the laws are in other states, but California says u cant change the stock engine or parts. If you put a new engine in it, you have to take it to some guy that works for the state (or something like that), and he has to inspect the changes and give it a ok or a fail. All this ive heard is only here in Cali.
