Hello all, this is my first post to FTE. I just recently found this site and have found it to be very informative. I recently purchased a 1976 F350 with a 460 motor. The truck runs great, until I try to restart it after warming it up to operating temperature. If I try to restart, the starter motor barely turns over. After letting it cool down for 10 minutes or so it starts easily. Does this sound like it's time for a new starter, or is it a characteristic of 460s?
Thanks in advance.
Bill

Hi, you have a big engine. A battery that works fine on a 302 won't cut it on my 390. I had to go to a real truck battery.
I don't know if they make a heat shield for those but I know it's a common problem on chevy's and they have several aftermarket heat shields to protect the starter from the heat of headers.
A new starter should cure the problem but may develop the same thing over time.
Does the truck have headers? If so you can insulate them and that will help also.
Vapor lock is another common problem. Try backing your timing off a little and see if it still does it.
One way to tell if it's starting hard because of the timing is when it's acting up, disconnect the coil wire from the distributor and ground it to the intake. If it turns over normally, back off the timing a little.
Hope this helps.
Greg
Thank you for your replies. The truck has the stock exhaust, and I have not yet checked the timing. The battery appears to be fairly old, so now I have a few things to look into.
Cheers,
Bill
I bake about a starter every 2 years on my 429, with no headers. I haven't gotten smart enought yet to install a heat sheild. It could be the same on the 460 although I haven't had that trouble on mine yet.
One other thing you may want to replace is the battery cables and the lead from the solonoid to the starter itself ..I would try that before replacing the starter as it is cheeper . also try checking the water level in the battery and add as needed
(distilled water)
