Window Motor replacement....my experience 2000 Expy
I removed the door panel and I checked the wiring to make sure the motor was getting power and it was. I then found the dimples in the metal panel to drill out to reach the screws that hold the window motor in place.
It took a 1/2 inch drill bit and quite a bit of help from a Dremel tool to remove enough metal to fit a 5/16 socket on the screws. The dimples didn't line up exactly on two of the screws. I probably should have used a 3/4 inch bit on two of the screw holes. I then removed the motor and hooked it up with some spare wire to my battery to see if it worked and it did. I wasn't expecting it to work.
I checked the wires again and it appeared that the window wiring harness wasn't getting any power, I don't know what I was doing wrong but it didn't seem to be getting any power to the harness. I re-installed the old motor and it began working again.(I began thinking maybe it wasn't bad after all).
I then greased all of the tracks and linkage and worked the window up and down several times and it worked great. After about ten or so times up and down the motor quit again in the down position. I tried to get the motor to go up but it wouldn't. With the window down it would make replacing the motor much more difficult. I got a rubber mallet and banged the door while hitting the window switch and got the window to go up again...whew! I then removed the old motor and it was noticeably hot from being used.
From there the motor replacement went pretty easy. The only problem was that the new motor came with three different wiring harnesses but they were all about half the length of the original wires so I had to solder on the old wires to a new harness so it would be long enough.
The new motor works great. I got it for $68 at NAPA. They tried to get me to buy a new motor with a new regulator assembly. I opted for just a new motor and I am glad I did.
If I can replace a motor anyone can. I may pick up some aftermarket speakers now that I know how easy it is to remove the door panels.
