Muffler Questions

I was under my truck yesterday and saw that on the exhaust there is a small cylinder maybe 15 inches long 10 inches around, behind it looks like something has been cut out and a straight piece of pipe put in. Is the small canister the muffler or does it sound like the muffler has been removed?

Sounds like you might be looking at a catalytic converter with a Cat Back exhaust with a muffler delete.

Its not a cat back system I dont think just a piece of straight pipe about 3 ft long then back to regular pipe. Iwasn;'t sur e if diesels had cat converters if so it is the only thing in the pipe.
