I picked up a Dana 44 open knuckle disc brake front axle from a 79 f250 to put in my truck just have a quick question about it what size is the axle tube? Need to know so I can pick up some u bolts to put the axle in my truck
Drum brakes?
That's a boat anchor! You could just measure the tube with a tape. While your at it you should do a u bolt flip. Have the threads go up into a new plate so the threads are not the low spot to hang up on obstacles.
Drum brakes? It has the disc brakes and open knuckles I'm swapping this in place of my old axle drum brakes closed knuckle 44 and yes I'll be doing the u bolt flip with the swap
73 Ford guy I'm doing the u bolt flip on the Dana 44 I got the passenger side done but the drivers side I'm having trouble with the one u bolt wraps around the axle tube on the outside of the leaf but the inner side has to go through a hole in the housing its thicker so I can't use the u bolt I have any ideas on what to do? I called acouple places that make u bolt flip kits and none have any ideas they said they don't make a kit for that because its not in demand and they usually just redo it the stock way for customers trucks
Not 100% following you.. Driver side u bolt,But inner or outer? In my case the inner wrapped the diff so I took a grinder and ground a groove in pot to allow ubolt to rest in. Some guys drill a hole but I think it's unecesary as if you see the stuff I do it holds fine.
What size u bolt are you using?
By inner and outer I mean by the leaf spring inner towards the diff which is the side with the hole I'm having trouble with and outer meaning towards the wheel I'm using 5/8 u bolts they slide through the housing hole but it isn't wide enough of a u bolt to go around the housing
