I am 98% sure my 17" chrome clad wheels are making a clicking or ticking sound as I drive. I took off the plastic center cap and the noise changed.. it's less than constant now.
Started as clicking, then popping, then banging as if my front Hub Brg was bad. After investigation found drivers front wheel clad was amking the noise. Extremely loud. After talking to wheel engineer at Ford and looking at wheel closely found that the chrome clad cutouts around the lug bolt holes was slightly off when they glued it on. This resulted in the edge of the clad to catch or touch 2 of the lug nuts when they were tightened down. As those studs would roll to the bottom and the rim would flex they would go "PING" or later they would go "BANG". THE FIX. took pliers and bent the edge of the clad away from the lugs and sprayed WD-40 in between the clad and the rim all the way around the entire clad and in the 5 spokes so the clad could move and shift without drag or scraping or catching on anything. Noise gone !!! The center hub cap covered the unsightly bent clad tabs. Luckliy it was only one wheel. The others had perfectly aligned clad during the gluing at assembly.
Follow up note to my previous repiar post. The OEM rims ar over 400$ each and so I simply HAD TO find a resolution. Look closely at where the clad may be touching the lugs.....if not then spray WD-40 in between the clad and the steel rim underneath especially all the way around the edge of the rim (the lip where the wheel weights attach). See if that helps.
